The Fruit of the Holy Spirit are those characteristics that are placed in us ( our nature ) by the Holy Spirit to govern and guide our lives. It consist of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self- control. The other aspect of us, our sinful nature, wants us to do evil. This is the opposite of what the Holy Spirit wants us to do. The sinful nature in us desires that we follow those things which are not of God : “ sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. “
These two aspects of our nature are constantly engaged in battle with each other. Those who give into their sinful natures “ will not inherit the Kingdom of God”. On the other hand, those who submit to the indwelling Holy Spirit , “ follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of [ their ] lives, and accept the fruit placed in them by the Holy Spirit will see God’s Kingdom”. ( Galatians 5: 22- 23 ).
